Seth brought us inside the massive walls of Trithen. They were similar to Rewyth’s, just like I remembered them to be. Of course, no height of walls could keep out a fae who was determined to enter.

But the walls were to keep out other things.

The fae had some enemies, after all.

“You can take the bed,” I said to Jade after we were escorted to our rooms.

She laughed, but not a real Jade laugh. It was more of a nervous laugh, one I rarely heard from her.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“You’re my husband,” she replied. “You don’t have to sleep on the floor. I think we can both be adults here.”

“Really?” I teased.

“Yes. Unless you disagree, then by all means sleep on the hard floor.”

“Please,” I teased. “I am much older than you, you know. If one of us is capable of acting like an adult, it’s surely me.”

She smiled half-heartedly, but her face grew dark just moments later.

“Something’s wrong,” I insisted. “Tell me what it is.”

Jade turned her eyes to the ceiling, blinking away tears. “It’s nothing,” she said.

“It’s clearly something,” I pushed. “If something is bothering you, just tell me and I’ll handle it.”

She shook her head, a single tear dropping down her tan skin. “No, it’s not like that. It’s just…” She paused and looked at me with those deep, ocean eyes. “Today is my birthday. I’m officially eighteen.”

My breath escaped me.

“And I’m sure Tessa is somewhere spending my birthday alone, thinking about all the possible ways I could have been killed by now. Or better yet, happily married to a monster.”

Her words didn’t hurt me. They were true. I saw the way Jade’s sister had looked at her…like there was a stranger in Jade’s own skin.

Tessa was the one person Jade had fought to survive for when she first came to Rewyth.

I didn’t let another second go by. I crossed the room in two steps and wrapped my arms around her. She did the same in return, as if she were desperate for it. “Happy birthday, princess,” I whispered. I was glad she couldn’t see my face, the disgust that would be dripped all over it.

Not disgust at her, of course.

I felt disgusted with myself, that I had let my own wife’s birthday pass and she could do nothing but sit by and watch.

“I’ll make it up to you,” I said to her. “I promise I will.”

“I don’t care about my birthday anyway,” she responded. “It’s never been more than disappointment and the depressing thought that I am yet another year closer to my death.”

I couldn’t respond.

“Things might be changing now that I married you and am still alive.”

Still, I said nothing.

“You can talk, you know,” she responded. “It’s not like I blame you for any of this.”

“No,” I said eventually, “but that doesn’t mean any of it is okay. You can be angry. Saints, you should be angry. With me or with the fae. You’re allowed to be mad.”

Jade shook her head. “If anything, I feel guilty.”

“Guilty?”

She nodded.
